Legend of the Red Dragon
The big one. LORD is the door that half the BBS world logged on for every single day — and this isn't a copy of it. This is the actual program off Bobby's World BBS: version 4.00a, the same registered install that ran here until 1999, pulled off the old hard drives and running in an emulator right in the window below.
It's one shared realm, the way it was on the board: everybody's warrior lives in the same world. Fight your way through the forest, level up at the training grounds, buy better steel at King Arthur's, flirt your way to charm at the Inn, and duel the other callers — they'll hear about it next time they log on. You get a limited number of forest fights per day, so it's a game you come back to, not one you binge. The door reads your name off the board's login, so your warrior is yours and nobody else can pick it up. One caller at a time gets the line; if it's busy, the board redials for you. Want it full-size? Open LORD on its own page.
How to play
All keyboard, all menus — every screen tells you which letter does what, so you can find your way without reading anything first. Best on a computer.
- Press the play button. Page past the title screen with Enter, then answer Y to join the realm. You won't be asked for a name — the door already knows you from the board.
- At the main menu press E to enter. You'll land in town. The first thing to do is (T) Train at the grounds and (K) King Arthur's Weapons for something better than a stick.
- (F) Forest is where you actually play. Fight, take the gold, and bank it before you die — death costs you what you're carrying. When your daily fights are gone, you're done until tomorrow.
- The multiplayer lives at (L) List Warriors and (A) Attack another player. The (I) Inn is where the flirting, the bragging and most of the trouble happens.
- (Q) quits the door and hands the line back to the next caller. Come back tomorrow for a fresh set of fights.
Yes, the Dragon can actually be killed. This copy is registered — Bobby paid for it back in the day — so the game is winnable, the way it was on the board.
